Ivory black gives a dark grey with a clear binder and a beautiful dark charcoal/anthracite colour in a white binder.


Rome Black:


Our Rome Black pigment is a natural black pigment made from lignite, which is a type of coal formed from the compressed remains of ancient plants. This traditional pigment has a slightly brownish hue and is perfect for creating soft, subtle black tones. It is ideal for use in watercolours and tempera, and can also be used in other painting and craft applications.

Rome black is a soft black, with a brown hue in a transparent binder, and is a grey/brown colour in a white binder.

Vine Black:

Vine black is a warm, brownish-black hue, and is not as dense or opaque as our other black pigments. I it an intense black with bluish tint when mixed with a clear binder. It is a deep grey mixed with a white binder.

Synthetic Pigments:


Carbon Black:


Carbon Black is one of the oldest and most widely used black pigments. It is produced by the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons, such as oil or natural gas. The resulting soot is then processed to remove impurities and form the pure pigment.

Carbon black is a deep black with excellent coverage in a transparent binder. It is solid neutral grey in a white binder.

Carbon black is the ‘blackest black’ in our range and has the strongest colouring power.


Lime black


Noir à la Chaux, also known as Lime Black or Milk of Lime Black, is a traditional black pigment that has been used in painting and decorative arts since ancient times. Our synthetic Noir à la Chaux pigment replicates the deep black colour and bluish undertone of the traditional pigment. It is ideal for use in fresco painting, where the pigment is applied to wet plaster and allowed to dry and set.

This pigment is warm black, black with brown undertones mixes to a warm grey with a white binder. It is similar to rome black.

This pigment is synthetic, with 80% natural ingredients. Lime black is non-toxic and safe for your health and the environment.
