What's the difference between mica and pigment powder?

Updated: Mar 26, 2023

While pigment powder and mica powder are both types of fine powders used in arts and crafts, there are some differences between the two.

Most often, ‘pigment powder’ refers to matte pigments, but pigment powder is any type of finely ground material that is used to colour and create various art mediums, including paints, inks, and dyes. Pigment powders are typically made from a wide variety of materials, including minerals, plants, and synthetic compounds. They are often opaque and provide good coverage, making them ideal for painting and printing applications.

Mica pigment powder

Mica powder is a type of mineral powder that is often used for its glittering and shimmering properties. It is made from the mineral mica, which can be mined from the earth, or be made in a lab. Both are ground into a fine powder and look very similar.

Mica powder is typically used to create a glittering or iridescent effect in various mediums, such as cosmetics, soap making, and crafts. Mica powder is available in a huge range of metallic or iridescent colours. There is more detail about mica pigment powders in this blog post, and you can see all our micas powders here.

Matte Pigment Powder

Matte Pigment powder, on the other hand, is a type of finely ground material used to colour and create various art mediums, including paints, inks, and dyes. Pigment powders are typically made from a wide variety of materials, including natural minerals, plants, and synthetic compounds. Pigment powder is matte in colour and has a chalky look and feel. Pigment powders come in a wide range of colours and can be opaque or semi-transparent depending on the type of pigment. There is more information about matte pigment powder in this blog post, and ou can see all our matte pigment powders here.

In summary, while both pigment powder and mica powder are types of fine powders used in arts and crafts, they have different properties and are used for different purposes. Pigment powders are used primarily for colouring mediums and are typically opaque, while mica powder is used primarily for its shimmering and glittering properties.
